This page contains answers to common questions handled by our support staff, along with some tips and tricks that we have found useful and presented here as questions. All of the following are suggestions and the user makes the final decision whether to implement them or not. Always make a backup of your computer before attempting any changes. If you have any doubts about making changes, wait and talk to someone experienced with your type of changes.
Note: In these answers we will follow a few shorthand conventions for describing user-interface procedures. Key combinations will be presented like this: Ctrl+Alt+Delete, which means that you should press and hold down the Control key, the Alt key, and the Delete key at the same time. Menu selections will be presented like this: File->Open, which means that you should open the File menu, and then make the Open selection.
1. Why doesn't my dial - up connection work?
I get the following error message, while using Win98/98SE.
"The computer you are dialing into cannot establish a dial - up connection. Check your password and try again".
I have seen this myself, the password was "OK". After several attempts to connect, I finally connected. This turned out to be no more than a very busy ISP connection site.
Before you reload anything or chase down files or re-write your password, make several tries at connecting and wait 10-15 minutes and try several more times. Waiting may give your ISP connection time to free up and you will connect. If you still get the error message, it's time to start checking your password and the file setupx.dll should be down loaded from your startup disk, it could be corrupted.
2. Why doesn't my Shut Down and Restart commands work?
The procedures seem to start normally, but the system crashes. Messages about waiting while windows shuts down and its safe to turn off the computer don't appear. The shut down and restart procedures work properly under safe mode, but not under normal mode.
When Windows shuts down, it performs many functions, including the transition of all protected mode drivers back to real mode. The completion of all disk write functions and flushing of the disk cache and the closing of all currently running programs, which includes running the Close Window code. When Windows does not shut down properly, it may appear to stop responding.
Shutdown problems in Windows can be caused by an incompatible, damaged or conflicting device driver, a damaged exit sound file, or incorrectly configured or damaged hardware. Because shutdown works in safe mode, your situation sounds like a device driver or printer driver problem. To be sure, you will need to isolate each step in the shutdown process and determine which is causing the problem.
