Theresa, The Operating System such as Windows is an interface between the software programs you wish to run on your computer and the internal hardware of your computer and the external devices attached to it. Not all software programs require an operating system such as Windows or Mac. These programs have been written to be self supporting (all the interface requirements are written into the program). They do not need an operating system to run. These programs may include diagnostic, maintenance, other utility programs, etc..
